A Deep Dive Into Our Treatments

Physiotherapy is a branch of modern medical science which includes examination, assessment, interpretation, physical diagnosis, planning and execution of treatment and advice to any person for the purpose of preventing, correcting, alleviating and limiting dysfunction, acute and chronic bodily malfunction including life saving measures via chest physiotherapy in the intensive care unit, curing physical disorders or disability, promoting physical fitness, facilitating healing and pain relief.

It is the form of treatment that uses physical measures rather than drugs or surgery in the treatment of disease or disability. Every hospital and primary care Trust has a physiotherapy department. Physiotherapy treatments are tailored to the needs of the individual, and play a major role in the rehabilitation of patients after an illness, accident or operation.

Professional physiotherapists can use a variety of methods to treat you, including:

A. EXERCISES
  • Passive exercise: Stiffness prevention with movement of joint and ease joint congestion.
  • Active exercise: Patient is taught a series of graduated exercises that are performed under the supervision of the physiotherapist.
  • Isometric exercise: Patient tenses a muscle repeatedly without moving it. These are used when movement causes pain or a joint is immobilized.
B. ELECTRICAL TREATMENTS (DIATHERMY)

It is used to relieve the pain of stiff, arthritic joints and muscles spasms by using short-wave electricity to produce heat within the tissues.

C. ULTRASOUND

Frequently used for sports injuries, this uses a very high frequency soundwave to treat acute soft tissue injuries by stimulating the healing processes.

D. HEAT & COLD TREATMENTS (THERMOTHERAPY)
  • Heat treatment: Given to ease muscle spasm, relieve pain and improve circulation, by heat lamps or hot pads.
  • Cold treatment: Involves applying ice packs or cold sprays to reduce pain, inflammation, congestion, and bruising.
E. HYDROTHERAPY

In hydrotherapy, exercises are performed in water, which supports the body’s weight, making it ideal for rehabilitation.

F. MASSAGE

Is used to relax the patient, reduce tissue swelling, ease muscle spasm and to break down tense muscular nodules.

Physiotherapists can use their knowledge and skills to assess, diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions, such as:
NEUROMUSCULOSKELETAL
  • Low back pain
  • Subacromial impingement
  • Sports injuries i.e. ACL rupture, tennis' elbow
  • Accidents, Arthiritis and many more
CARDIO
  • Chronic heart disease
  • Rehabilitation after heart attack and many more
RESPIRATORY

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • Cystic fibrosis and many more
NUEROLOGICAL TREATMENTS FOR

Orthopaedic Physiotherapy primarily focuses on orthopedics and treatment conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system (joints, muscles, bones, ligaments, and tendons). It diagnoses, manages, and cures disorders of the musculoskeletal system and recuperates patients after orthopaedic surgery.

Orthopedic injuries and conditions may include: Fractures, Muscle strains, Ligament sprains, Post-operative conditions, Tendonitis, and Bursitis. With an experienced Orthopaedic Physiotherapist, success rate for healing becomes much higher as they provide tailor-made treatment programs with exercises.

Following are some of the exercise programs that are used: Strengthening exercises, Stretching and flexibility exercises, Exercises to improve range of motion, Balance exercises, Functional mobility exercises, Endurance exercises, Plyometric and jumping-type exercises.

Electrotherapy is an effective method for wound healing, nerve regeneration, pain management, and soft tissue injury treatment. It uses electrical signals to interfere with the transmission of neural pain signals into the brain, effectively slowing down or distracting the message.

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS)

TENS is widely used for a variety of painful conditions such as Arthritis, Low back pain, Labour pain, and Nerve related pain.

History of Electrotherapy

Electrical stimulation for pain control was used in ancient Rome, 63 A.D. It was reported by Scribonius Largus that pain was relieved by standing on an electrical fish at the seashore. From the 16th to 18th centuries various electrostatic devices were used for headaches and other pains, even Benjamin Franklin was a supporter of this method for pain relief.
